Andrew has been Principal Bass Clarinet of Orchestra Victoria since 1989, and has lectured at the University of Melbourne and Monash University
Andrew began clarinet studies at the age of seven, from a family steeped in the musical performance traditions of Salvation Army and Municipal brass bands and regional orchestral ensembles.
As a music scholar at Camberwell Grammar, he gained experience in musical ensembles of all kinds, leading him to pursue clarinet studies at tertiary level. Andrew graduated from University of Melbourne in 1980, studying with Ms Isobel Carter, gaining first class honours in clarinet performance.
Whilst working with Orchestra Victoria and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and numerous other freelance ensembles, he completed his Masters degree in Music Performance in 1988 under the direction of Mr Philip Miechel.
The following year Andrew was appointed Second Clarinet /Bass Clarinet in Orchestra Victoria. He has worked in every clarinet position within the orchestra, and for the past twelve years has been Principal Bass Clarinet. He has taught both Clarinet and Bass Clarinet extensively at both secondary and tertiary level.
Married with adult children, Andrew enjoys hiking, photography, and riding anything on two wheels, being a keen cyclist and motorcyclist.
