Kate Stockwin

Kate was Principal Clarinet with Orchestra Victoria for over 20 years and is an AMEB Examiner

About Me

Kate graduated from the Canberra School of Music with a BA Mus (Hons) majoring in Clarinet Performance. Subsequently she was appointed Principal Clarinet with Orchestra Victoria, holding this position for over 20 years. During this time she rehearsed and performed many major clarinet solos, mostly in opera and ballet repertoire. Kate performed regularly in a variety of chamber music groups, as well as teaching and mentoring as part of Orchestra Victoria mOVe education program across regional Victoria.

In recent years Kate has qualified as a VCE Solo Performance examiner and also as an AMEB clarinet and saxophone examiner. She enjoys performing  chamber music, and as a member of Aequales Ensemble has played a wide variety of repertoire, most recently performing the clarinet quintets of Mozart, Brahms and Weber.

Clarinet lessons in her home music studio often involve preparation for AMEB and VCE performance exams as well as for upcoming solo recitals or ensemble concerts. Technical work, solo repertoire, sight reading and transposition are covered, as well as a focus on reed preparation and tonal development. Duet sight-reading is often a fun feature of her lessons, as is orchestral repertoire, also often in duet form. Aural training with the piano is also covered, especially if appropriate for upcoming exams. Although Kate enjoys teaching towards performance goals, she also works with students who are interested in playing in a more leisurely manner.
