Kate was the Principal Clarinet of Orchestra Victoria for over 20 years and is an AMEB Examiner
Kate graduated from the Canberra School of Music with BA Music, majoring in Clarinet Performance and soon after was appointed Principal Clarinet with Orchestra Victoria, a position she held for over 20 years. During this time she rehearsed and performed many major clarinet solos, mostly in opera and ballet repertoire. She performed regularly in a variety of chamber music groups, as well as teaching and mentoring as part of Orchestra Victoria mOVe education program across regional Victoria.
In recent years Kate has qualified to become a VCE clarinet examiner and also an AMEB clarinet and saxophone examiner. She performs chamber music as a member of Aequales Ensemble, playing a wide variety of repertoire but regularly performing the clarinet quintets of Mozart, Brahms and Weber.
Clarinet lessons in her home music studio often involve preparation for AMEB and VCE performance exams as well as for upcoming solo recitals or ensemble concerts. Technical work, solo repertoire, sight reading and transposition are covered, as well as a focus on reed preparation and tone development. Duet sight-reading is often a fun feature of her lessons, as is orchestral repertoire, also often in duet form. Aural training with the piano is also covered, especially if appropriate for upcoming exams. Although Kate enjoys teaching towards performance goals, she also takes on students who are mainly interested in playing in a more leisurely manor.
